On Theatre Craft and Songs of Tradition

Workshops on Theatre Craft and Songs of Tradition, conducted by Mr. Richards and assisted by other members of Theatre No Theatre, strive to unearth the creative potentialities of each participant through work on the relations between body and action, precision and organicity, tradition and individual work, as well working on ancient song, text development, composition, development of lines of physical actions and the living voice.

Elements of Our Practice

Our workshops are based on two core programs — Theatre Craft and Songs of Tradition. The content and structure of each workshop are designed in consultation with partner institutions, ensuring that its components are shaped to fit each context and need. We conduct these workshops througout the world, fostering exchange through performance and shared practice.

Work on Song

Practical sessions on songs from Afro-Caribbean and African traditions — a core element of Thomas Richards’ research, developed through his apprenticeship with Jerzy Grotowski. An exploration of how a work on melody, sonic resonance and living action can help awaken hidden potentialities within the inner life.

Development and Presentations of Individual Works

Participants develop and present original works — based on song, text, or both — refining their artistic processes and deepening their practical understanding of craft.

Analysis

Thomas Richards leads a collective reflection on each participant’s work, exploring direction and possibilities for further development.

Through analysis and shared discussion, participants deepen their grasp of craft and its essential elements.

Mentoring

Under the direction of Thomas Richards, Participants receive focused artistic guidance through direct dialogue and individual sessions with Theatre No Theatre team members.

Dramaturgy

Investigating how themes emerge for the creator and material takes shape, and how structure — whether narrative or non-narrative — and action work together in the creation of a performance.

Acting

The actor is approached as a creator. Participants identify themes essential to them and develop material from these discoveries — lines of action arising from creative necessity. Acting craft is explored throughout this process, discovering impulses, lines of physical action, and elaborating creative structures.
