A series of workshops led by Jessica Losilla-Hébrail
in Milan, Italy, since 2022.
These workshops are open to anyone wishing to deepen
a practical work on singing. Through the relationship between precision and organicity, the workshop will strive to unearth the creative potential of each participant, focusing on action, singing and the living voice.

Impulse · Voice · Action

Fundamentally, the exploration takes place along two lines:
one centered on songs from Afro-Caribbean and African traditions, and the other on the participants’ own songs or texts, explored as potential creative tools.

Sessions of work on songs

Sessions of work on songs coming from Afro-Caribbean and African traditions will be held. These sessions contain an approach to voice, impulse and action that has been at the heart of Thomas Richards’ research for more than thirty-five years, a working process in which the work on song explores the potential impact that the vibrational, rhythmic and melodic qualities of a given song can have on the doing person.

As in some traditions, such work on song and action is accompanied by an approach to the interiority of the human being and its potentialities. Step by step, participants will be guided by Jessica Losilla-Hébrail, assisted by Theatre No Theatre members, in a particular experience of interweaving impulse, voice and action.

Uncovering potential

Participants will be invited to bring one or more songs and/or texts, to investigate their nature, and look for a specific living line that these materials might reveal, uncovering their potential as creative tools.

About

Led by Jessica Losilla-Hébrail, Thomas Richards’ assistant, collaborator, and a dedicated practitioner of this work for nearly two decades, these workshops have been held in Milan, Italy since June 2022. They welcome actors, amateur performers, and students alike, with many participants returning for multiple sessions.

In October 2024, Theatre No Theatre hosted an Open Rehearsal in Milan that featured works-in-progress by Il canto vivo participants, organized in collaboration with Zeroteatro.

Since the outset, Zeroteatro has provided the framework for this series, inviting Jessica Losilla-Hébrail to conduct these sessions. Looking ahead, Zeroteatro and Theatre No Theatre will continue co-organizing these workshops, and new participants are warmly invited to join.

The journey begins in Milan with the Workshop, 'Il canto vivo' from May 29th to 31st, 2026. This workshop is the 20th in a cycle of workshops that Jessica Losilla-Hébrail, assisted by Ettore Brocca, has conducted since June 2022. It is open to anyone wishing to deepen a practical work on singing. Following the workshop in Milan, the work transitions to a more immersive setting for the Residency, 'Il canto vivo' from June 19th to 23rd, 2026. The residency will take place in a deconsecrated church from the late '600 located in Pecorino, a small hamlet of Ameno surrounded by woods, near Lake Orta. Participants will reside in an eighteenth-century villa adjacent to the church.

The exploration for both the workshop and the residency will take place along two lines. Firstly, sessions of work on songs coming from Afro-Caribbean and African traditions will be held. These sessions contain an approach to voice, impulse and action that has been at the heart of Thomas Richards’ research for more than thirty-five years, a working process in which the work on song explores the potential impact that the vibrational, rhythmic and melodic qualities of a given song can have on the doing person. As in some traditions, the work on song and action is accompanied by an approach to the interiority of the human being and its potentialities. Step by step, participants will be guided in a particular experience of interweaving impulse, voice and action. Secondly, participants will be invited to bring one or more songs and/or texts, to investigate their nature, looking for a specific living line that these materials could reveal and their potential as creative tools.
